FOMO

FOMO: Fear of missing out (FOMO) is the feeling of apprehension that one is either not in the know about or missing out on information, events, experiences, or life decisions that could make one’s life better.

  • It describes the anxiety stemming from perceived exclusion from potentially enriching experiences.

Eve was tempted by the serpent’s deceitful promise of elevated knowledge and godliness; the allure of seemingly superior experiences fueled FOMO.

Genesis 3:1-6 NKJV Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” [2] And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; [3] but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'” [4] Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. [5] For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” [6] So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

  • Fear of missing out (FOMO) caused Eve to find the fruit more desirable than obedience to God.
  • You are tempted by your desires
  • Your desires depend on who or what you trust. Serpent/world or God?
  • Desire for Spirit or the flesh

All humans are vulnerable to the seductive power of darkness.

  • Its perceived advantage, whether it’s social inclusion or forbidden knowledge is a lie.
  • It is against God’s principles; it is without God.
  • Where there is no God, there is fear and torment.
  • Where there is God, there is holiness, peace and love.
  • Hebrews 4:7 “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.”

Galatians 5:5-6 NKJV For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. [6] For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

What’s Love got to do with it?

John 3:16-17 NKJV For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. [17] For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

1 John 4:18 NKJV There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

  • There is no FOMO when you experience God’s perfect love.
  • Through Jesus, we’ve been reconciled to the Father God, who adopted us

Romans 8:15 NKJV For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

The story of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis provides a powerful example of human disobedience and its consequences.

  • This temptation played on Eve’s fear of missing out on knowledge and experience. Eve, seeing the fruit as desirable, disobeyed God’s command and ate the fruit, also giving some to Adam, who also ate it.
  • This act of disobedience, known as The Fall, had significant consequences for humanity.
  • So, today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts – Hebrews 4:7

No Fear

  • For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

John 14:27 NKJV Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

  • No fear
  • God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
  • There is no fear in love; but perfect love, Jesus Christ casts out fear, because fear involves torment. (1 John 4:18)

Hebrews 4:9-11 NKJV There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. [10] For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. [11] Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.

  • Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, no more FOMO.
