Genesis 3
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which [is] in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where [art] thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I [was] naked; and I hid myself.
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou [wast] naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest [to be] with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What [is] this [that] thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou [art] cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire [shall be] to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou [art], and unto dust shalt thou return.
20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 ¶ And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Two Trees
- Tree of life
- Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil
Revelation 22:2 (NKJV) In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
God gave Adam and Eve all they needed for life and happiness, all that was good and pleasant, and He allowed them to enjoy it in abundance.
The two trees are important.
The tree of life sustained life for humankind
To eat of the tree of knowledge of ggod and evil meant to disobey God and incur the penalty of death.
We do not know what these trees were.
To Adam and Eve, even death was foreign.
Eden
The Hebrew word `Eden means pleasure.
The Septuagint translates Eden as paradise
The Hebrew pardec (HSN-<H6508>) is translated “orchard” (Eccl. 2:5; Song 4:13) and “forest” (Neh. 2:8).
Satan
Genesis 3:1 (NKJV) Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
The serpent deceived Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden; God curses the earth; Adam and Eve sent out of the Garden of Eden
Genesis 3:1 The Serpent was more subtle.
The word rendered “subtle” in Genesis 3:1 means wise, in a good sense as well as in a bad sense.
“Subtle” is rendered “prudent”
Proverbs 8:12 (NKJV) “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion.
“Subtle” is rendered “crafty”
Psalm 83:3 (NKJV) They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
The word “beast” also, in Genesis 3:1, chay, denotes a living being, and it is as wrong to translate zoa “beasts” in Revelation 4, as it is to translate chay “beast” in Genesis 3. Both mean living creature.
Satan is thus spoken of as being “more wise than any other living creature which Jehovah Elohim had made”.
We cannot conceive Eve as holding conversation with a snake, but we can understand her being fascinated by an “an angel of light” (i.e. a glorious angel).
The Hebrew word rendered “serpent” in Genesis 3:1 is Nachash (from the root Nachash, to shine, and means a shining one.
Hence, in Chaldee it means brass or copper, because of its shining.
In the same way Saraph means a burning one.
Numbers 21:8 (NKJV) Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.”
The serpents mentioned in Numbers 21 were burning, in the poison of their bite, they were called Saraphim, or Seraphs.
But when the LORD said unto Moses, “Make thee a Saraph”, and, in obeying this command, we read in verse 9, “Moses made a Nachash of brass”.
Nachash is thus used as being interchangeable with Saraph.
Revelation 20:2 (NKJV) He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;
Satan was the “anointed cherub”.
It appears that he was the head of the cherubim.
Cherubim, Saraphim, Shedim etc., Elohim class
Speaking of his fall, the Bible has this to say.
Ezekiel 28:13-15 (NKJV) [13] You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created. [14] “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. [15] You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.
Isaiah 14:12-14 (NKJV) [12] “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! [13] For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; [14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’
- Though he is commonly called Lucifer, the exact word in Hebrew is Heylel – Heylel ben shachar.
- This word Heylel appears nowhere else in the Bible.
- Root: from hālal (in the sense of brightness)
- to be clear (origin of sound, but usually of color);
- to shine; hence to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish;
- to rave; causative to celebrate;
- also to stultify :- (make) boast (self), celebrate, commend, (deal, make), fool (-ish, -ly), glory, give [light], be (make, feign self) mad (against), give in marriage, [sing, be worthy of] praise, rage, renowned, shine.
- Shachar means the morning. Ben Shachar means the son of the morning.
- Whatever his name is, he is the one ultimately responsible for all sin and rebellion in the Universe. We know that he took down a third of the Elohim class of beings with him into damnation.
Death
Genesis 3:6 (NKJV) So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
Romans 5:12 (NKJV) Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
1 Corinthians 15:22 (NKJV) For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
Romans 5:17 (NKJV) For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
1 Timothy 2:14 (NKJV) And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
Revelation 21:4 (NKJV) And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
