Be Angry?

Ephesians-Our Battle Manual 8

Psalm 4:2–3 2 How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood? Selah 3 But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The LORD will hear when I call to Him.

  • How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame?
  • How long will you love worthlessness
  • How long will you seek falsehood

Here the David is pondering and asking these questions to the Lord.

  • Psalm 4 aimed at the “Godly”; Israel in the OT, us in the NT

Judges 14:5–6 5 So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. 6 And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

1 Samuel 17:34–36 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, 35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.”

  • In the OT, Lion. Bear, Goliath.

Jesus reading from Isaiah’s prophecy,

Luke 4:18–19 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Psalm 118:14 14 The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.

Anger

  • Heart of God.
  • Our heart.
  • Ephesians our battle manual

Ephesians 4:26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

Angry = orgizō (or-gid’-zo)

  • to provoke, to arouse to anger
  • to be provoked to anger, be angry, be wroth

Luke 15:28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him.

  • Wrath of God = Indignant anger =feeling or showing anger because of something unjust or unworthy

Psalm 69:24 Pour out Your indignation upon them, And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.

Isaiah 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, Cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger, To lay the land desolate; And He will destroy its sinners from it.

So what does it mean to be angry and not sin in the new covenant we are in with God?

  • Our Struggle is spiritual

Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

  • Fellowship with God and brethren in Christ

1 John 1:3–5 3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full. 5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

Spirit, Soul, Body

  • If I ask you who you are, you will tell me your name.
  • If I ask you what you are, you will tell me your profession
  • If I ask you where you live, you will tell me your address

Biblically you are a spirit, who lives in a body and you have a soul

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Who are the captives?

Isaiah 61:1 1 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

  • Captives = aichmalōtos (aheekh-mal-o-tos’)

Isaiah 5:13 Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they have no knowledge; Their honorable men are famished, And their multitude dried up with thirst.

  • Oppressed = thrauō =broken by calamity. rāṣaṣ in Hebrew

Isaiah 58:6 “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?

  • This is what our Lord Jesus came for.
  • Because they have no knowledge
  • let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke

Isaiah 10:27 It shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, And his yoke from your neck, And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

  • The infilling of the Holy Spirit will teach you to abide in Jesus.
  • Not to be misunderstood.

Promises of God

  • In Christ, all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen

2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

Thief

Remember, what does it mean to be angry and not sin in the new covenant we are in with God?

John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Ephesians 4:26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

Psalm 4:1–8 1 Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. 2 How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood? Selah 3 But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The Lord will hear when I call to Him. 4 Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in the Lord. 6There are many who say, “Who will show us any good?” Lord, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us. 7 You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine increased. 8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

    • Verse 2: How long will you people ruin my reputation? How long will you make groundless accusations? How long will you continue your lies?
  • Represent Jesus

Romans 12:1–2 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Be angry, and do not sin.

  • Angry with all stealing and destruction that the devil has wrought, with the life and its fullness that he has stolen from us.
  • Don’t let the sun go down, don’t compromise
  • He healed them all
  • The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me – If we are born again
  • Because He has anointed Me – Once we accept Jesus Christ, our Father in Heaven will sent His Holy Spirit
    1. To preach the gospel to the poor;
    2. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
    3. To proclaim liberty to the captives And
    4. recovery of sight to the blind,
    5. To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
    6. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

  1. Renew your mind in the Word of God.
  2. Be filled with the Spirit of God
  3. Speak to God, in tongues if you do not know what to pray for.
  4. Don’t miss the gathering of believers, don’t fall away.
  5. Give and give sacrificially. It is the best way to get out our comfort zones.

Psalm 118:5–9 5 I called on the Lord in distress; The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place. 6 The Lord ison my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? 7 The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me. 8It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man. 9It isbetter to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes.

Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Dear God, I repent of my sins and my ways apart from you. I put my trust in Jesus Christ as Lord; the master over my life, and my Saviour. Forgive me and grant me your gift of everlasting life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
