Proverbs 27:23 Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, And attend to your herds;
Not possible to be a shepherd after God’s heart without the Holy Spirit.
Proverbs 17:3 The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the LORD tests the hearts.
Discern refining, testing or correction
Proverbs 26:26 Though his hatred is covered by deceit, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
Discern the heart of people as revealed.
- Wisdom Proverbs natural vs spiritual
- Speak to fools vs don’t speak.
Anointing
Anointing is the ritual act of pouring aromatic oil over a person’s head or entire body. Old
Leviticus 8:12 And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.
1 Samuel 9:27–10:1 27 As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” And he went on. “But you stand here awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God.” 1 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “Is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance?
In the New Testament
John 1:32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
The Purpose of the Anointing
The Holy Spirit is our teacher.
- Not Google or Television
- The Holy Spirit, though Jesus.
John 16:12–13 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
- Teaching for sanctification
- Teaching for commission
Only though His Church.
Ephesians 4:12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
- We will discuss that later.
Sanctification
To revise
- Sin separates
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
- God reconciles.
2 Corinthians 5:18–19 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
- The Holy Spirit empowers by enabling sanctification.
- To “sanctify” something is to set it apart; make us holy.
1 Peter 1:2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
- The word from God sanctifies us.
John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
- While we are positionally holy -“set free from every sin” by the blood of Christ – we know that we still sin.
1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
- Obedience to the Word of God in one’s life is sanctification.
- God sanctifies as you believe and submit, it is His will.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;
- God started the work of making us like Christ, and He is continuing it.
Philippians 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
- This is to be pursued by the believer earnestly.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
These are the basics.
This residing anointing that sanctifies is what John is referring to.
1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
The reason that John wrote this is to make sure we don’t get deceived.
- The purpose of the anointing in your life.
- More about that next week
In the KJV, the anointing is of God, not from God.
- Soul vs Being, KJV vs NKJV
If I say to someone, “Take this from me,” it means I have it.
But if I say to someone, “Take this of me,” they cannot do it because I am it.
- My good looks, for example
The phrase of Him means that He is the source.
- This anointing is Him;
The abiding anointing that comes into your spirit and becomes one with your heart at salvation is a revelation anointing.
- It reveals everything about God. It is endless because it teaches you all things.
This anointing of Him is separate from the one from Him.
- The one of Him is the inner anointing for living described in 1 John.
- The one from Him is the outer anointing for ministry described in Acts 1:8.
Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
