Genesis 36:7 NKJV
For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock.
This puzzles me because on one hand, we know that the Lord declares in Malachi 1:3 that “Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness.”
On the other, we read in 1 Timothy 6 that Paul tells Timothy “godliness with contentment is great gain” and that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
During Jesus’ temptation, the devil offered all the kingdoms of the world and its wealth, so God is not necessarily the custodian of riches. In Proverbs 10:22 we understand that true wealth come from God when He states that “The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.”
Was Esau family torn apart in a sense because money was loved more? The older I get, the more sorrowful it seems to me.
I see similar events this day in our lives, where everything from babies being murdered in the womb to parents being abandoned to old age home all in the name of convenience, be it financial or social.
I know that we need money to live this life on Earth, like we need air to breathe, but what puzzles me is where to tell folks who love God to draw the line and say “thus far and no more”?
Maybe, just maybe, we ought to repent and follow the Apostle advice in 1 Timothy 6:11-12 “But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. [12] Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
Our Lord Jesus was absolutely correct and stated the truth when He said that we can either serve mammon or God (Matt. 6:24).
