Old Sages

Understanding and Revelation

Proverbs 4:7 NKJV Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.

  • get understanding of what is already revealed though the word of God.
  • Old Covenant
  • New Covenant is more
  • Not only do we have to get understanding of what is already revealed though the word of God.
  • But we have to have a constant revelation from God

Matthew 16:17-18 NKJV Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. [18] And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Romans 8:14 NKJV For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Romans 1:17 NKJV For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

This is only possible through a relationship with God.

What breaks our hearts?

A song recorded by Tina Turner in her album, Private Dancer, called “What’s love got to do, got to do with it?” says

  • Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?

What breaks our hearts?

  • Things of God

Psalm 119:53 Voice Burning anger rises in me, has me in its grip because the unrighteous abandon Your teachings.

  • Things of man

Isaiah 5:20 (NKJV) 20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

What’s love got to do with it?

  • Earthly love is a heart issue, we give our heart only to those we trust.
  • But our heart can lie to us

Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

  • Solomon’s temple dedication

1 Kings 8:39 NKJV then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men),

Jesus knows our hearts (John 2:25)

John 2:24-25 NKJV But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, [25] and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

  • We need Jesus to heal

A New Heart

Biblical words like heart, soul, spirit, and flesh simply present different aspects of the unity of the personality.

  • The living soul is the total person (Genesis 2:7).

Genesis 2:7 KJV And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

When we are born again

  • We get a new heart if we want it, sanctification

Ezekiel 36:26 NKJV I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

  • We have to choose to obey God

1 Corinthians 6:19 NKJV Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

Today, even in the church, we do what’s right in our eyes,

  • and even justify it, by manipulating what God has said,
  • calling call evil good, and good evil
  • When we seek our own, instead of being patient and waiting on the Lord

We are troubled because of our impatience with God

  • OT – create Ishmaels

Troubled because of mistrust that develops in our heart, causing fear

  • NT – Peter, give into peer pressure.

John 14:1 NKJV “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.

  • This deceitful mistrust of God causes us to take matters into our own hands,
  • This leads to anxiety, when things eventually go wrong.

Proverbs 12:25 NKJV Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.

That is the reason we must be guided by the Holy Spirit at all times.

Old Sages

  • The Holy Spirit always leads us to Jesus Christ
  • In Him, we can find rest, hope

2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

  • Claim His promises to you.
  • Cast your burdens to Him.
  • Godly exchange and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:7 NKJV casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Psalm 55:22 NKJV Cast your burden on the LORD, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

For me, to be fulfilled in my gifting, my purpose, my calling, is a much greater blessing than inheriting crores because it brings a personal satisfaction that I can’t get through what I would buy

  • it’s actually accomplishing what I am made for.
  • This can only be achieved if I actively cast my cares and burdens on the LORD
  • This puts me at peace with myself and with God.

Psalm 119:97-104 MSG Oh, how I love all you’ve revealed; I reverently ponder it all the day long. Your commands give me an edge on my enemies; they never become obsolete. I’ve even become smarter than my teachers since I’ve pondered and absorbed your counsel. I’ve become wiser than the wise old sages simply by doing what you tell me. I watch my step, avoiding the ditches and ruts of evil so I can spend all my time keeping your Word. I never make detours from the route you laid out; you gave me such good directions. Your words are so choice, so tasty; I prefer them to the best home cooking. With your instruction, I understand life; that’s why I hate false propaganda.

  • Spend time with God.
  • Ponder on what He has revealed.
  • Do not make detours, diversions, or sightseeing excursions.
  • Gives us an edge over our enemies, not flesh & blood.
  • Makes us wiser than the wise old sages simply by doing what God tells us.
But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. (Hebrews 13:16)
