The impact of the first incursion of evil, the fall of man, still plagues you and me. Sin distorts our perspective and holds us in a prison whether or not we are conscious of it. Our relationships, decisions, goals, abilities even our environment and our communities are affected by the inevitable disintegration caused by sin’s entrance into the world. According to Romans 5:12 sin entered the world through one person, but its result, death, came to all people, because all have sinned.
If that sounds a little bleak, take heart. Before Adam and Eve made that fatal decision to disobey, God already had plans to rescue us. Because of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, we have been set free from sin’s crippling effects: “How much more, then, will the blood of christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14)
